- Tk Updates. All four flavours of the Tk'ed Angband variants (AngbandTk v2.9.0r1, OAngbandTk v0.4.1r1, KAngbandTk v2.8.3r10 and ZAngbandTk v2.2.8r2) have been given a spit and shine by Tim Baker. You can download all four from the AngbandTk homepage and view the changes list there too.
- Allegro Addition. ...speaking of tarting games up with flash front-ends *grin*, 'Wingnut' has created a version of DOS Nethack that uses the Allegro library to enhance the display. What this means is you can have a much higher resolution screen displaying upto 32bit colour 32x32 sized tiles. Naturally, it's called AllegroHack. Pop along to the website, take a peek at the screenshots and download it.

- New Borgband. Dennis van Es has released another new version (260400) of his automated orientated variant - Borgband. Apparently with this version Borgband should compile on a Linux box now, although it's untested. Here are the changes...

- Amiga Booboo. Bablos made a slight error with his Amiga PernAngband (v4.0.6) port. Rather that reword his post and get it horribly mixed up, here it is in full...
Hi There...

Seems like I made a little mistake with Pern406 when I compiled it. I
had compiled it so that it depended upon the AmiTCP TCP/IP stack in
order to run. I've finally got rid of it and a new archive is now
available;

ftp://export.andrew.cmu.edu/angband/Incoming/pernangband-406-ami.lha
(1749K)

The archive contails an executable for 030/FPU, and a patch for a
basic 68000 version. To create the 68000 version, type the following
command at a shell prompt after changing to the PernAngband directory;

spatch -oPernAngband -pPern000.pch PernAngband030

You'll also need to download the latest Amiga specific distribution of
Python. It can be found on Aminet.

If you've already downloaded the file, and have run into problems
(I've only heard of one thus far. Only one Amiga Pern player out
there?!!), then an archive is available containing patches to take you
from the old 030 executable to the new 030 and 000 executables;

http://wkweb5.cableinet.co.uk/bablos/angband/Pern406pch.lzx  (640K)

Follow the same steps for patches as detailed above.
- Long Weekend. You probably already guessed from the lack of updates that I took a couple of days holiday last week (Wednesday onwards, to be precise) to extend what was already a long weekend. Should have probably mentioned it before I took it, but there you go. Luckily, there wasn't a major outbreak of news seconds after I went home so no damage done eh? :)

- New Borgband. Dennis van Es has made a few changes (listed below) to his Borgband variant and released a new version. If all goes well, there should be Linux version available soon. Here is the list of the additions...
  • Fixed a bug where the borg tried to zap a charging Rod of Healing.
  • DSM could only be activated once, they were charging forever. Fixed that.
  • Changed the title of the window to reflect the borgband version.
  • Converted from 2.8.3 to 2.9.0
  • The borg will now admit it, if he has no swaps.
  • Changed the restarting code (tnx Bill Seymour) for Windows.
  • Added some code to get it to work in linux (tnx Coen van Antwerpen), but it still won't compile.
  • Slowed mages down (they won't dive as fast as they used to)
  • Added a bunch of artifact activations.
  • I tried to improve the survival changes of mages, but they still suck.

- Test Silmar. 'Lord Draknor' would just like to mention that he is still eager for people to help test his multiplayer roguelike game, Silmar. They're up to v0.19 alpha and really need people to spot any rampant bugs they've got lurking deep in the code. If you wish to assist, get in touch with them.
- UNIX SLASH'EM. Ali Harlow has put together a UNIX distribution of SLASH'EM, (v0.0.6E1). According to Ali, this version has been tested somewhat and barring any bugs there were in NetHack 3.3.0, it's quite stable. You can find it on his webpage here.

- Logo Link. As per a suggestion by Andreas Boesche, the logo at the top of each RLNews page links to the RLNews Logo Archive. If you need me, I'll be out back kicking myself for not thinking of that idea myself :)
- Goodbye Ben. Chances are you've already heard but here it is anyway - after several years as maintainer of Angband, Ben Harrison is stepping down. Citing demands on time, Ben made his announcement on rec.games.roguelike.angband, which you can find in it's complete form here in the Articles section.
- Hello Robert. As Ben steps down, Robert Rühlmann steps up to take over as maintainer. Having fiddled with variants and running the comprehensive Thangorodrim website, Robert will now look after Angband. He's already released a new version (2.9.0), bringing together changes made in the 2.8.5 beta with some of his own additions. Details of which can be found in his own posting to the Angband newsgroup which I've stored here. The files for new version can be found...

- Chaos Kingdom Preview. Looks like the time has come for the weekly Blinkingdot.com plug so here it is. This time they've got a preview of a roguelike game called 'Chaos Kingdom' from HumanSoft. The game appears to be a medieval politics RPG but does tie in roguelike elements. Anyhoo, you'll find the preview here.
