		CALL TO THE ARMS!!!
----------------------------------------------------------

Introductory Statement: this is *not* a commercial ad ;-)

Are you a roguelike game maniac? Have you ever thought
about writing your own adventure game or even better,
about studying a completely new evolution of the
 roguelike computer adventure game genre?

If you have any knowledge of computer programming, and
a bit of spare time, take a look at our project, you
might even find it interesting enough to join us!

And... hurry up, ORCS! are approaching...

----------------------------------------------------------

Back a couple of years ago, a small group of roguelike
game maniacs started working on a very ambitious project,
which was later called ORCS! (you may have heard about
it, as there were also some advertisings on the usenet,
as well as a small mailing list and webpage.

The goal of this project was the research, study and
coding of a new programming environment specifically
 customized for roguelike games.

The ORCS! project included a new, elegant, simple but
powerful object-oriented language, a compiler for it,
and a game-running kernel, loading and playing the
compiled modules. A server-client scheme would have
allowed a much higher plot complexity than in current
games, and would have made it possible to have different
user interaction frontends, ranging from old-style
vt100-like textual interfaces to highest-level graphic
 ones.

After a long study & discussion stage, the project
didn't take off because of the lack of spare time of
the various contributors, and it was "temporarily" put
in a wait state. It has been left in this state for
a number of months, until a couple of days ago, when
two different people asked me about it, and offered
 their help.

So we're now looking for other contributors, to
finally start working on this ambitious and exciting
project and materialize it into a real thing.

If you feel you might want to contribute, or if you
are just curious, please send a message to me, as
 cars@civ.bio.unipd.it.

 We need your help, really.

By the way, in these days I'm also setting up a small
webpage (which is now in a very uncomplete stage) at
 http://www.bio.unipd.it/~cars/Orcs! - give it a try!
