Some of the greybeards among you might recall the days of Ben Harrison
and before (!), when "Vanilla Angband" was just "Angband", and there were
no variants.
Over the years I compiled the PowerMac version (back when PowerMacs
were new), and created a version of Angband with some Macintosh interface
enhancements, like a graphical window for the game options, a three-paned
monster lookup window that was pretty cool, and a small collection of
other options for mac users to take advantage of the interface we knew
and loved.
I tried to keep Mac-Enhanced Angband current with the "standard" version,
but the big releases were 2.7.9v6 and 2.8.2. When 2.8.3 came out, I
decided that the rat's nest of code the mac version had become needed
major cleaning, and set about to modernize the core with a modern event
loop and structure as a basis to build all future mac versions from. I
put other plans on hold and got started, thinking it would take a few
weeks or a month. I got permission from John Norstad to use parts of the
superb NewsWatcher source code as a base to build from, and started.
This turned out to be far more difficult than I had ever imagined. I got
about 90% of the way through it and then hit walls. The very talented Joe
Francis of Netscape rode to my rescue and provided some key code for
dealing with the Thread Manager, without which all of my reworking would
have been dead in the water (and gave other valuable contributions too,
and great ideas!). Still, I found myself too rusty and too short of time
to do the job I needed to to make the project continue to thrive. I still
get polite email to the web site saying "Are you alive?"
It's time to pass the torch.
Enter Arcum Dagsson, who most of you know. I asked him if he would be
interesting in taking over as the maintainer of the mac-enhanced version,
and to my great delight, he accepted. I have complete faith in both his
abilities and his vision for the project, and I really look forward to
seeing what he does with it. And most of all, I look forward to the mac
community having MAE back in development again -- any degree of which
would be better than what I've provided over the last 18 months.
I hope those of you who played the Mac-Enhanced version and anxiously
awaited releases during this time can forgive the frustrations of waiting
endlessly. This is often the way it goes with freeware, open-source
projects, I know, but I still feel bad about it. I feel very good about
handing it over to Arcum, though; I'm sure that as long as there are mac
angband lovers out there (and really, sure, we love Quake, but Angband is
the World's Greatest Game (tm), there's no honest dispute about that), the
mac-enhanced version will be out there kicking.
So, it is with some personal sadness that I let go, but (a) retirements
are so ephemeral these days :) and (b) the project is now in very good
hands. I'd like to thank Arcum for his interest, talent and energy, and
I'll always be around to help out. Angband has a permanent spot on my
desktop and in my nerdy hacker heart.
Thanks to the friends I made along the way, and smile! It's still
alive.
